The opening Master Class took place in the amazing building of the ING Bank in Amsterdam and started with an interesting lecture by professor Herman Wijffels. He spoke about the problems of our time, which he believes mainly take place on a global level. Our economic system is not productive anymore and we are going beyond the carrying capacity of our earth. "Change is very much needed", Wijffels believes and "therefore mankind needs a new state of consciousness”. We need to change our world view and adopt relational ethics instead of individual and circular thinking instead of linear. Not an easy goal to achieve, but the achievement starts within you. Professor Wijffels argued that in order to create changes on a collective level, we need to evaluate and change on a personal level as well.
In the afternoon we discussed the four levels one can distinguish in our learning process and on which change can take place: I, WE, IT and ALL. These levels have been a recurrent theme in all our meetings, so we can structure our ideas and lessons. We also spoke about creating shared values and discussed the process of setting up an actual business based model on such values with three different entrepreneurs who promote sustainability through their business. It was very interesting to see how people actually implement the theoretical concepts we discuss and it was therefore very informative to have a few entrepreneurs joining us. Of course, during this first day we also did some exercises not only in order to learn more about leadership, but also to get to know each other and our own groups.
